This Month in Review

A great month for peace. The Nobel Peace Prize went to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzay for their work in the protection of the rights of young people. Satyarthi is the founder of the “Save the Childhood Movement”, which focuses on protecting the rights of children and working to end child labor. Yousafzay, the youngest Nobel Prize winner yet, is an activist for women’s rights surrounding education.

A good month for Twilight Fans. According to creators of the Twilight saga, five female directors will be chosen to create their own short films based on the movie. These short films will be promoted and released on Facebook throughout the next year. A bad month, however, for those who are tired of the incessant fighting of “Team Jacob” versus “Team Edward”.

A good month for Apple product enthusiasts. Along with new the iWatch and iOS 8, Apple has released their perhaps most awaited product, the Iphone 6. The new phone is bigger and thinner than ever before. However, this has caused quite a problem for those who want to keep their phones in their back pockets, as Apple has already received numerous complaints regarding the phone’s “bendability”.

A good month for animal activists to take a stand as the catastrophe surrounding chickens at Foster Farms unfolds. Intruders entered the premises and killed 920 chickens using golf clubs. Four teenagers have since been arrested on suspicion of being the attackers.

A good month for Netflix binge watchers in Germany, as the company finally announced its release in the country. However, this may result in a bad month for I.B. students who may drift into a vegetative state after the full consequences of these binges manifest themselves.

A bad month for Snapchat users, as hackers leak more than 10,000 photos and videos. Nevertheless, a good month for increased awareness surrounding victims of sexual crimes. Celebrities, who have had nudes leaked by hackers (although not directly related to Snapchat), such as Jennifer Lawrence, have taken a stand against these “sex crimes”.

The Ebola epidemic continues, as death tolls reach almost 5,000 and cases of the disease begin to spread beyond African nations. Germany recently recorded the first death in the country as a result the disease. Mark Zuckerberg, however, generously donated $25 million to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
