Movie Review of Trash

By Toni Seyfarth

Trash

Based on the Carnegie Prize-shortlisted novel by Andy Mulligan, the movie “Trash” by Stephen Daldry, has movie aficionados on the edge of their seats with anticipation. The enthralling trailer has a distinct “Slumdog Millionaire” feel and gives the viewer the impression that the movie will be anything but trash.

The plot of this new adventure thriller revolves around three boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rato, who live on the streets in the slums of an unnamed city in Brazil. The three spend their days and nights on the gigantic trash mountains on the outskirts of the metropolis, sorting and sifting through the dumpsters searching for anything interesting or valuable. When they find an inconspicuous leather briefcase on trash mountain, they are unaware that the content will change their lives forever: money, a map, an ID, and a key. It turns out that these items are of immense importance despite their quotidian appearance. The police’s interest in their find arouses the boys’ suspicions and they embark on a journey to expose the secret of the mysterious briefcase. As they stumble upon a dead man’s attempts to uncover a terrible secret, the boys are drawn into a web of violence and corruption, where human life is worth nothing and people are willing to do anything to prevent the truth from coming out. Well-known actors including Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen are starring alongside three young, Brazilian new-comers, Rickson Teves, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein, who are celebrating their debut on the big-screen with this movie. “Trash” is coming to German cinemas on November 27th.
